What is Multicultural Fiction?
Multicultural fiction features authentic cultures, ethnic groups and characters that are new or unfamiliar to the reader. The term "multiculturalism" originates in education, springing from recent curriculum changes in the U.S. public schools that needed to give more attention to history and literature.
Example of Ways to Use in Classroom:
~ Have students research their background of their own personal culture and then find a book related to their culture.
~ Have students do book reports on the book they found/used
~ Share with the class the book and how it relates to them and that particular culture
~ Show how everyone is different and makes it personal. The students get to know one another on a different level.
Key Elements:
~ Similar to fiction books
~ Gives the reader a view into another world or culture
~ Has strong characters and character interactions
~ Lots of dialogue between characters
~ High level of detail throughout the story
